YKVN receives 2014 Asian-Mena Counsel Deals of the Year Award for our role in the Vietinbank Strategic Sale
Hanoi / Ho Chi Minh City / Singapore (March 25, 2014) – For the 4th consecutive year, and for the 6th time in the past 8 years, YKVN’s legal team has been recognized in one of Asian-Mena Counsel’s “Deals of the Year” for 2013 for its role as lead counsel to Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade (Vietinbank) in Vietinbank’s sale of a 20% strategic stake for approximately US$743 million to the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd. (BTMU).
The Vietinbank deal is the largest deal in the history of M&A in Vietnam and is probably the most complex M&A deal involving a significant State asset since the Government of Vietnam started its equitization program in 2006 due to its size and importance, the regulated nature of the banking sector, the status of Vietinbank as a publicly traded and listed company and the tough market conditions. Working on YKVN’s team advising Vietinbank were partners Truong Nhat Quang (Ho Chi Minh City), Duong Thu Ha (Hanoi) and K. Minh Dang (Singapore) and a team of banking and corporate associates based in Hanoi and Singapore.
JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley were the financial advisors to Vietinbank and BTMU respectively. Jones Day acted as German counsel to Vietinbank. Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer acted as Vietnamese and German counsel to BTMU. Nagashima Ohno & Tsunematsu acted as Japanese counsel to BTMU.
Asia-Mena Counsel is a leading publication for corporate and in-house counsel in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions. Asia-Mena Counsel had previously recognized deals in which YKVN was on the legal advisory team as one of its Deals of the Year in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2011, and 2012.
