K. Minh Dang Joins YKVN to Head New Singapore Office and Lead Expansion of Cross-Border Practice

Singapore (January 19, 2011) – Vietnamese law firm YKVN today announced that K. Minh Dang has joined the firm as a partner and will head a new office in Singapore. Dang will also lead the expansion of YKVN’s cross-border practice. With the opening of the Singapore office, YKVN becomes the first Vietnamese law firm to expand into the region.

Dang joins YKVN from DLA Piper’s Singapore office, where he had been partner in charge of the Southeast Asia corporate practice for the last four years. His long and distinguished career includes almost 20 years at White & Case in the US and Southeast Asia. In the early 1990s he set up the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City offices of that firm and served as the executive partner for the Vietnam offices. He also headed White & Case’s Vietnam practice until he left to join DLA Piper in 2005. He is a top-rated lawyer in the Vietnam market and a well-known mergers and acquisitions lawyer in Singapore and across Asia.

“This is an exciting opportunity for YKVN,” says Managing Partner Truong Nhat Quang . “Minh Dang is an old friend of the firm. His extensive experience, skills, and reputation in Vietnam and the region will be invaluable assets as we move to the next stage of our growth and development. In key areas of our practice, especially inbound and outbound M&A and private equity, Minh will also add substantial strength to the deal management and execution capabilities for which YKVN is already well recognized in the market.”

“YKVN is a widely recognized market leader in Vietnam due to the impressive breadth, depth, and sophistication of its’ practice, which ranges from path breaking capital markets and private equity transactions to precedent setting litigation and arbitration”, adds Dang. “I’m proud to join a firm that has accomplished so much in its short history and look forward to leading the development of YKVN’s cross-border practice in the region.”

In the 17 years since he moved to Southeast Asia from the US, Dang has had considerable experience working on inbound Vietnam transactions and Asia outbound transactions. Recent inbound transactions he has advised on include Vietnam acquisitions by a Singapore GLC and multinational corporations based in Singapore, the US and Europe. Recent outbound transactions include the acquisition of Friendster, a California social network site by a Malaysian conglomerate, and energy asset acquisition in Russia, Central Asia and Latin America. He is perhaps best known in Vietnam for leading the White & Case representation of Vietnam in the London Club restructuring of Vietnam’s commercial debts in the 1990s.

“Establishing an office in the financial center of Southeast Asia is a natural step for YKVN ”, adds Dang. “We will be closer to many top clients who maintain headquarters here, better able to serve Vietnamese clients with SGX listings and outbound acquisitions, and well-positioned to assist in the resolution of Vietnam related commercial disputes through arbitration in Singapore, which is emerging as the forum of choice for such disputes.”

Established in 1999, YKVN is a top Vietnamese law firm with more than sixty lawyers and domestic offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. It is a market leader in securities, project finance, banking, foreign investment, M&A, corporate and commercial, litigation and arbitration, international trade and tax. The firm is a three-time winner of the International Financial Law Review’s “National Law Firm of the Year” award.
